Submit a Book ReviewGoodbye Jeanine
By: Joyce Wilhelmina Sackett
Date of loss: August 2012
Submitted on January 22, 2018
I read this just a few weeks after my son had died. It was raw and hopeful for me. I wasn't able to concentrate for long and this book was just snippits of the Mom's journaling so I could read it in small nuggets. Warning: this book includes a heart wrenching detailed account of Mom & Dad trying to revive their daughter.

I read this about 2 months into my grieving and was very impacted by it. I appreciated the blurbs included throughout the book by other suicide loss survivors.

Lament for a Son
By: Nicholas Wolterstorff
Date of loss: August 2012
Submitted on January 22, 2018
This is a small book but very, very good for someone who has lost a child in any way (this author lost his son in a mountain climbing accident - not to suicide). It is Christian based. If I remember correctly, the author is a pastor and the book is actually three separate sermons he did after his son's death.

Grieving a Suicide
By: Albert Y. Hsu
Date of loss: August 2012
Submitted on January 22, 2018
The author is a Christian & writes about his journey after his Dad's suicide. This has a heavier focus on scripture than other Christian books on suicide loss I've read. I liked it.

Heaven: Better By Far
By: J. Oswald Sanders
Date of loss: August 2012
Submitted on January 22, 2018
A good book about Heaven and it wasn't nearly as meaty & intimidating as Randy Alcorn's Heaven book. It's hard to concentrate when you're newly bereaved!

A Mother’s Story
By: Gloria Vanderbilt
Date of loss: August 2012
Submitted on January 22, 2018
A raw, real story about losing your son to suicide. It was written in 1996 so the language... "committed suicide" is included. It includes some details about her son's actual death that may be very hard for some to read.
Gloria Vanderbilt speaks of her remaining son - Anderson Cooper - being the only reason she was able to keep living. This is hard to hear and not a very hopeful message.
An okay book but proceed with caution. It is a very quick read.

Mourning, After Suicide
By: Lois A. Bloom
Date of loss: August 2012
Submitted on January 22, 2018
This is a very short book with basic sub-categories to it like: Guilt, Relief, Stigma, Anger, etc. The author's 23 year old son took his life. Generally what the author has to say is okay. She says she's a Christian (if I remember correctly) but I'm not aligned with some of her "logic" around why God allowed this to happen.
